Delivery is not enough#
A system can deliver information without causing learning.
Learning requires more than receiving facts. It requires retention, relation, reflection, and use. If the material is not structured well enough to be remembered and applied, then the delivery may have been successful while the learning failed.
That distinction matters in public communication because writers often assume that if they said it, they taught it. They did not necessarily.
Structure carries learning forward#
Learning depends on what the reader can carry out of the text. That means the text has to make its own shape recoverable. The reader needs to know what is central, what is supporting, and what is conditional.
